Here’s what I do:

Look up the top selling product or book in the niche I’m looking to move into. Then get a piece of paper and fold it in half straight down the middle. On one side of the paper I list all of the positive things people say. Down the other side I list all of the negative things people say.

Instantly you have a window into the thoughts and feelings of the people you are trying to sell to. Use this tactic in your articles and websites and I’m 100% sure you will see a very noticeable increase in sales.

Your job as an affiliate marketer is to understand the needs of your target market and to make an emotional connection with them. I promise you, that sounds much harder and more complicated than it really is. Amazon reviews cut straight to the point and by using that information, the person reading your article or blog post will think:

“Hey, this guys get’s me, he understands my problem”

That’s half the battle won right there. Now gently introduce a great product, explain why it’s so good and feel free to mention any negatives too (it’ll help build trust).

This stuff works, I promise.

Scams . . .

I received an email recently from someone who subscribes to my list asking whether MarketHealth.com is a scam. After reading various threads on forums he was worried that markethealth.com were shaving payments from affiliates. He included a few links so I decided to take a look.

Sure enough there it was. At least three forum threads claiming that markethealth.com do not pay their affiliates. Well thankfully I never stumbled across this before I started promoting markethealth products. I started a niche website back in February 2010 that now pays out around $1000+ every month without fail.

This got me thinking . . . . I wonder how many other things we read on forums or social networking sites we just blindly believe?

Myths . . .

Early in my affiliate marketing career (LOL – just 2 years ago) I believed all kinds of crazy SEO myths. For example:

“Building more than 35 backlinks in a day to a website will get you sandboxed or even de-indexed”

Yeh right! There are waaaaay too many variables involved in SEO for a statement of this kind to ever work. But I read it on a forum, believed the person writing it knew what he was talking about and blindly followed that rule.

Worst of all (and I‘m ashamed to say it) I even recited this “fact” to other people who, for all I know, might still be following it.

I’m sure this is happening all over the web right now and it’s making internet marketers everywhere become tired and frustrated.

Guru’s . . .

The Guru’s (you know who you are) understand this. They see this weakness and they swoop in with a new “push button system” or  “business in a box.”

This is EXACTLY what you must avoid at all costs! Affiliate marketing is about making an emotional connection with your customers. If you have a good product that solves your customers problem, or get’s them excited, then you will make sales as long as you can get it in front of them.

Yes it takes a little work. But once you see a trickle of sales into your account you should feel confident that a great flood is usually behind it. As long as you keep pumping the well (your niche) you’ll see more money flow in.

The internet connects you with a vast well of potential customers. It’s your job, as an affiliate, to tap into that resource. Learn the skills that will allow you to do that and you’ll be able to achieve any level of income you desire. Provided you’re willing to put the work in of course.

So be careful with what you believe on forums, social media and blog posts. Stick to making your customers happy and avoid the big guru product launches.

Copyblogger (one of my favourite blogs, which I highly recommend) stated that by using the subject line “you are not alone” you can improve your open rate to 90% and above. Very interesting indeed. Luckily I already had a topic for my email – the recent Google farmer update, and I decided I could bend the subject line to fit that message.

Meet the Big Panda . . .

If you haven’t heard of the recent Google update (code named Big Panda I think) then I’ll quickly give you a run through. The good people over at Google towers recently announced that they were going to tweak the algorithm in order to cut away from the search results lots of (what they consider) low quality web pages. This mainly relates to web pages which were intentionally keyword stuffed in order to rank for certain keywords with very little agenda except to garner a click through to a sales or landing page. Ezinearticles.com and articlesbase.com were the two big losers in this change and they’ve seen enormous drops in traffic.

So the email to my list explained this, and went on to say that many webmasters who utilize article marketing have recently seen drops in traffic as a result, hence the subject line: You Are Not Alone.

Here’s the cool bit . . .

The open rate of that email shot up to 64%! But what’s really interesting here is the implications of such a statement getting such a huge response. As Sean Platt suggests, we all want to feel connected. We want to empathize and feel empathy.

When I worked in an office, before I had a full time internet marketing business to run from home, I always fantasised about the money and freedom this business would give me, but I completely overlooked the sense of community you get with internet marketing too. One of the major bonuses of being a full time internet marketer is that I get to interact daily with so many like minded, interesting people.

A. You don’t just need Twitter, you also need Facebook & Youtube too IMO. These 3 sites are the powerhouses of the social media world. Google is crawling them all the time and so having your presence there is great for SEO. Plus you can get tons of traffic *if* you know what you’re doing.

Q. How can I incorporate Twitter into my current campaigns?

A. This is tricky. If you’re building small flippable adsense sites around keywords like “electronic darboard” then don’t bother. But if you’re in any niche which has a human interest angle (dieting, ex back, health) then building up your twitter and facebook following is really worth while.

Q. Why Jimmy, why is Twitter/Facebook worthwhile?

A. Because people sit at their desks all day, logged in with these sites open. They spend tons of time on them because they’re fun. They spend hours going to and from work on them on their phones. They go to Google to search for information, but they go to Twitter and Facebook to hang out with friends and to network.

Q. But nobody is going to want to follow or join my Psoriasis treatment review site on the social networks.

A. You’ll be surprised. I have quite a few facebook pages and twitter accounts for sites in health niches which are being found organically as they spread due to the viral nature of these networks. Just because you wouldn’t follow or join something doesn’t mean others won’t.

But here’s the thing . . .

These sites ARE NOT for selling your products (IMO). Use the social networks to reach out to your audience and pull click to your site. So after you add a blog post you tweet it, get them to your site where they can then explore further. Just make sure your posts are interesting and engaging. Twitter and Facebook are there to help you become friends with your niche. Once your niche is familiar with you, they come to you for advice and guidance on purchases – guaranteed!

But who really has time to mess around with these things?

Not me!
